AC Converter: The difference between a converter and an inverter

Any device that converts one form of electric current to another is called a converter. You can convert alternating current to direct current or direct current to alternating current. You can also convert from analog to digital. You can also increase or decrease the current voltage using these AC converters.

Inverters and converters are usually the same. However, there are differences for practical purposes. We will see some differences in the following paragraph.

They are also useful for supplying polarized voltage for welding.

Inverters have the ability to convert direct current from solar energy into alternating current.

They can also convert direct current to alternating current from dry cell batteries.

A UPS is a device that uses an inverter to supply power to a computer and other installations in the event of a power outage.


Some electronic devices can run in digital mode. Output can be in analog mode. You need a converter to convert the mode to sync.

You may need to increase the voltage capacity from the mains. You may need a step-up transformer for this. If you want to reduce the voltage, you should use a step-down transformer.

During an electrical breakdown, you can use an inverter to power your local devices with energy stored in batteries.

You can connect the inverter to the UPS to ensure uninterrupted power supply during a power outage.


Converters have low overload capacity.

These converters are more expensive than mechanical regulators.

You cannot use inverters for inductive AC as well as for heavy load motors.

They can damage sensitive devices.

In these days of power outages you may need to install inverters and AC converters to ensure uninterrupted power supply. There are also examples of low voltage or sudden increase in voltage. It is best to use a step-up / step-down transformer at such times.
