Diptyque’s new wallpaper collection pays homage to the French light brand’s past

Although most people are familiar with the French light brand Diptyque, it is not as well known that the company’s three founders – Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet and Yves Coueslant – saw the first success from the unique clothing patterns they created. So while it’s understandable if Diptyque’s first wallpaper collection ever seems clear out of the blue to you, the launch actually makes perfect sense. Truly, it is both a logical next step to its growing home furnishing category and a tribute to the company’s exploratory and artistic beginnings.

Still, the wallpaper launch is exciting nonetheless. The January release, available on Diptyque’s website now, features a series of 10 powerful designs taken from the brand’s archives. And its signatures can be clearly seen throughout. Gautrot and Knox-Leet’s The Pretoria design, which was reinterpreted for this collection, has the house’s iconic, ancient Roman shield-inspired oval shape. Similarly, Gautrot’s Art Deco Basile pattern, originally printed on fabrics sold in the flagship store, returned as Basile Frieze for the new line.

Bringing these classics back to life without compromising their integrity was undoubtedly an achievement. That’s probably why Diptyque relied on Cécile Figuette, founder of the Bien Fait wallpaper brand, to help with the process. With the fragrance house, the French designer used his expertise and unique view of perspective and scale to capture the essence of Diptyque’s history and transform it into a complete collection of elegant wall decals.

That’s why you will find more than just “traditional” wallpapers in the collection. Of course there are also: Classic patterned wallpaper panels are available for $ 650. But there are also panoramic interiors in two sizes for $ 960 and $ 1,715 respectively. In addition, you can buy a “Frieze” – a wallpaper “reminiscent of the wainscoting commonly found in Parisian apartments” in panels for $ 835. All of these are printed on non-woven wallpaper instead of fabric with a more durable digital printing technology.

As can be seen from the pictures that capture the new collection, the wallpapers are perfectly paired with both each other and the rest of the brand’s home decor line. So even though you may have a little trouble choosing which one to buy, you can be sure that it will have no problem fitting in with the rest of your Diptyque pieces.
