The popularity of digital art is growing every year as the required technology is becoming readily available to everyone. Once the domain of graphic designers or artists such as Andy Warhol, it is now becoming a common way to create artwork. No other medium will allow you to delete 100 times without causing minor damage to your canvas.
This article will explain the different styles of digital art and discuss each category in a little more detail to help eliminate some of the complications. Anyone new to digital art will no doubt encounter words like ‘vector’, ‘pixel’ or ‘mixed media’ art but may not be able to access a clear explanation. As art always has a way, there is always some explanation and the way I have chosen to categorize art styles may not suit everyone.
Digital art can be divided into 5 main styles, mixed media, vector, fractal, digital painting and pixel:
Mixed media or integrated art
Since the advent of Photoshop in the 90’s, mixed media or integrated art has been introduced to the masses. Mixed media is exactly what its name suggests; It is a fusion of many art forms such as painting, photography, drawing and digital. Using programs such as Photoshop artists are often able to combine these art forms with great results. A popular style of mixed media is ‘pop art’, led by Andy Warhol’s portrait style, which involves the use of a computer program to add bright colors to an image and often 4 or 9 images in different colors. Multiple panels are aligned to create blocks. . Mixed media is often seen in digital abstract art.
One of the most popular digital art techniques, a better term for it could be “vector-based art”, meaning art created using a vector-based program such as Illustrator or Freehand or Coral Draw. The artist uses vector drawing software and creates images entirely in a virtual environment. Style uses shapes that are outlines and can be filled with different colors and patterns; This usually produces a rough edge or graphic look. Signature flat colors and clear lines are quick to view and attract attention which makes them popular among advertisers trying to grab the public’s attention.
Fractal art has been around for some time but is slowly recovering. Examples of fractals can be found in the natural world, although in the form of digital art it is an art created entirely using mathematical formulas; They are infinite in their ability to be seen in ever-increasing detail. The closer you look, the more details you will have as you zoom in on the image. Fractal art is typically created using fractal generating software, the program consists of three main phases: setting the appropriate fractal software criteria, performing the longest possible calculations, and evaluating the product.
Digital painting is an art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oil, imposto, etc. are applied using digital software. Digital painting differs from many other forms of digital art in that it is created without the use of templates or computer-generated models. The artist uses painting techniques to create digital paintings directly on the computer. Digital art software programs use traditional techniques such as brush strokes and color combinations to mimic physical media. The styles available are rapidly changing but include pastel, watercolor, oil, charcoal and acrylic.
Pixel art in the form of digital art breaking all these ground is celebrating the resurgence of old school pixel techniques and the humble beginning of computer art. It’s a retro digital art style that is making a comeback. When viewed, most people immediately remember their old Commodore 64 or Attari graphics, in fact these older computer and video games use all the pixel technology. Pixel art is usually drawn by pixels in minute details using very limited color palettes and basic computer graphics tools. One of the most popular programs is Microsoft Paint, a program that has not been updated in years, although it is a perfect tool for creating pixel art.
