Naturist Holidays in Port Leucate, France

Have you ever had a slightly disturbing dream that you were naked in a public place, such as on the street, on a bike, in a store, or on public transport? If so, what happened in the dream? Did you wonder how you got into this situation, were you ashamed or thought it was just a dream, so it doesn’t matter?

If you’ve had such dreams and haven’t done naturism yet, you might like it.

Every year, thousands of families spend their holidays from April to October in one of the nudist villages that lie between the ancient Mediterranean city of Leucate and the seaside resort and marina of Port Leucate.

There is mostly no traffic in the villages, but you can walk or bike like everyone else completely naked. There is a small mall with a very good bakery where you can buy fresh croissants, bread, etc., you can shop in the supermarket, buy from the butcher, liquor store or newspaper store, and have a drink or eat in one of the small restaurants. staying naked all the time.

These villages, including Aphrodite and Oasis, were founded by the Tourism Commission established by President Charles de Gaulle in the 1960s. The government was looking for a way to encourage thousands of holidaymakers to stay in France rather than heading to Spain in search of a beach holiday.

The old town of Leucate is located between the Mediterranean Sea and a large sea lagoon. South of the city there is a narrow strip of land several kilometers long between the sea and the lagoon. Six kilometers to the south was an old settlement, and it was here that the commission proposed a new project called Port Leucate, with a marina, shopping center and holiday homes. Work began in the mid-1960s, and de Gaulle visited the work in progress in 1967. Following his visit, the panel was asked to discuss the future of the beautiful stretch of beach north of the new resort of Port Leucate.

At that time, the practice and tolerance of naturism was growing in France, and there were already various naturist destinations, including the large naturist resort complex at Montalivet on the Atlantic coast north of Bordeaux.

The investigated strip of the beach has on one side the Mediterranean Sea, and on the other – the Leucate lagoon, and in fact is an island, since there are two channels to the north and south, connecting the sea to the lagoon. Therefore, it was decided that it would be the ideal location for the development of a nudist beach resort with access only for residents and holidaymakers.

Rather than just a campsite with mobile homes and tent sites, it was decided to create a real village with houses, apartments, tennis courts, swimming pools and a shopping center. Plans were drawn up and work began in 1973. Years passed and development continued, and today there are a total of 8 small villages located next to each other, which border either the beach or the lagoon. Many properties have permanent residents, but most are provided by the owners for nudist vacation rentals. Most of the areas are pedestrianized so children can play, run or cycle safely.

At certain times of the year, the winds blow here, making the area one of the most popular windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations.

One of the advantages of the area, which makes it ideal for families, is the range of other activities in the vicinity of the nudist villages. Less than 10 minutes away by car, there is a large aqua center with several pools and giant slides. There is an adventure center in the nearby pine forest where people of all ages can climb and ride trees. Also nearby is a casino and a new cinema. The Pyrenees can be seen from the village, and from autumn to spring, snow can be seen at the highest peaks. Once on the doorstep of the Pyrenees, you can of course take walks through the magnificent countryside.

About 35 minutes away there is a large African nature reserve, Sigean, which is interesting for both adults and children. One part can only be visited by car, as there are many animals in their natural habitat, including lions. Then there is another part that can be visited on foot, which includes many birds, monkeys, antelopes, elephants and many other species of creatures.

The area is one of the sunniest in France, so of course one of the most popular activities is just relaxing on the beach next to your holiday apartment and perhaps having a little siesta in dreams of being naked in public.
