Shopping sisters | News, Sports, Jobs

This Saturday, many local businesses will be participating in the 10th annual Sister Saturday in downtown Fort Dodge.

Organizer Mary Kay Daniel said, “Participating businesses have changed over the years, but the purpose and theme have remained the same. We have a wide variety of 13 businesses for 2022. Bring your sister, bring your mom, bring your best shopping partner, have fun, support your local businesses. ”

Daniel said the event was started by several women who owned businesses downtown.

Prior to opening Real Deals, Janelle Hotz, Beth Plautz, and Shawn Portz had gone to Waconia, Minnesota. to visit their local Real Deals on Home Decor. The town was hosting their DEAR Hunt event that weekend so they shopped in their downtown area.

”The whole downtown was filled with women in their orange hunting vests and camo,“She said.”While shopping, they were given an event calendar and on the calendar was an annual event called Sister Saturday which was held on Valentine’s weekend. Once Janelle, Beth, and Shawn opened Real Deals, they created a retailers group called ‘The Downtown Divas’, which was a group of women that owned retail businesses downtown. The Downtown Divas then implemented Sister Saturday, Ghouls Night Out, and The DEAR Hunt. ”

Daniel said event goers can expect a “Day full of stress-free shopping along with deals, giveaways, refreshments, and snacks.”

This year there will be a drawing for a gift basket valued at over $ 100 with items from participating stores.

“Pick up a punch card at any participating business. For every $ 10 spent, you will receive a stamp. When you have five stamps, $ 50 spent, leave the card at any participating business and start a new card. Each card is an entry into the gift basket drawing, ” Daniel said.

Sister Saturday will be from 10 am to 4 pm For more information, visit the Shop Local Shop Central Facebook page.
